RIOMAGGIORE WINES
Riomaggiore shares the same culinary tradition as the other Cinque Terre towns. Despite the fact that it is a seaside town, its cuisine is based mainly around agricultural produce. Among the most common dishes is the salted rice cake, prepared especially for the festival in honour of San Giovanni Battista, patron saint of the hamlet. The country minestrone, prepared with olive oil, potatoes and wild herbs, the ravioli and the chestnut flour cake are also typical of Riomaggiore. Where seafood dishes are concerned, Riomaggiore offers the chance to taste dried cod, salted anchovies and filled mussels, which are typical of the spezzian coastline.
Sciacchetrà is the most famous of the Riomaggiore wines, and is made with dry white grapes (bosco, vermentino and albarola), which are left to dry on special grates. This typically golden coloured wine gives off an intense and lasting scent.
Another wine typical of Riomaggiore is the Costa de Sera, a white wine produced locally in Serra, and made using the same grapes that are used for Sciacchetrà, but in a different way.
